Completing the Curriculum
Both SDP and MDP curriculums are structured with core courses in addition to elective based options to allow you to customize your learning. There are four core courses you must take in addition to a minimum of three elective courses that you select from the list of options. These courses do not need to be taken in a specific order and are offered year round.
Note – if you took any or all of the courses in the past, you will still receive credit toward the Hopkins Essentials program without having to retake the course.
Hopkins SMDP Essentials
In additional to developing supervisor and manager skills, it’s important for leaders at all levels to learn about Hopkins specific policies and procedures. This training program consists of seven courses and is designed to provide basic Hopkins policy information to newly hired faculty or staff or to faculty or staff that were recently promoted into a position where they are responsible for the supervision and management of others.
As a requirement according to JHU policy, within two years of initial employment or promotion to the role, it is expected that all new managers and supervisors will complete the Hopkins Essentials Program (formally known as the JHU Supervisory Training Program) established by Johns Hopkins University. The supervisory training program is conducted by Human Resources, the Department of Health, Safety and Environment, and the General Counsel’s Office. Participants are expected to complete all courses in order to receive a certificate of program completion.
Note – if you took any or all of the courses in the past, you will receive credit toward each program without having to retake the course.
